Arnoud van Egmond's long and turbulent tenure as Duke of Guelders was defined by near-constant conflict — with his own father, whom he imprisoned for years to seize power, and later with his own son Adolf, who returned the favor by capturing Arnoud and holding him at Grave castle. The fifty-year span of this issue reflects less political stability than simple dynastic stubbornness.
Guelders maintained its own mint output jealously throughout this period, resisting monetary integration with neighboring Burgundian territories even as Philip the Good systematically absorbed the Low Countries around it.
