John of Arkel held the see of Liège from 1364 until his death in 1378, but his episcopate was defined less by piety than by factional warfare with the city's guilds and the chronic fiscal pressure of maintaining an independent ecclesiastical principality wedged between Brabant, the Empire, and France. The narrow two-year window assigned to this type likely reflects a retooling of the coinage rather than a change in issuer — Arkel struck repeatedly across different weight standards as silver supplies and political alliances shifted.
