Obverse description Full-length frontal effigy of Bishop John of Arkel depicted standing en face, vested in episcopal robes and wearing a mitre. The right hand is raised in benediction while the left hand holds a crozier. Beneath the figure, the shield of Arkel is displayed, dividing the surrounding circular legend. The rendering is characteristic of Gothic hammered coinage of the Meuse valley region, with linear stylization typical of mid-14th-century ecclesiastical issues.
