Fernando I's grave was introduced as part of a broader monetary reorganization during his reign, at a moment when Portuguese currency was under sustained pressure from the costs of war with Castile — conflicts that dragged through much of the 1360s and 1370s and severely strained royal finances. The Valência de Alcântara mint, operating under Portuguese control during Fernando's campaigns in Extremadura, produced this issue during a narrow window before the peace negotiations of 1371 effectively ended Portuguese ambitions in the region.
