Obverse description Central field features a crowned royal shield bearing the Portuguese quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross), enclosed within a double linear border. The crown surmounting the shield is rendered in a stylized Gothic manner characteristic of 14th-century Iberian hammered coinage. The overall design is somewhat irregular in strike, as typical of billon issues of this period. A circular legend in uncial Latin surrounds the central device.
