Descrição do anverso Stylised, abstract head of Apollo facing right in the Celtic artistic tradition, derived from Macedonian prototypes. The wreath is rendered with a greater concentration of leaves to the right side, and a prominent hairbar presented as a single bold linear spike emanating from a ringed pellet, with three annulets disposed behind it. Three parallel lines occupy the space between the wreath and the ear crescent, the rearmost of three linear crescents, each formed with corded arcs. Additional arcs fill the field between the wreath and the crescents, enriching the abstract decorative composition.

Informações adicionais

The Atrebates occupied territory spanning modern Sussex, Hampshire, and Berkshire — a tribal grouping with direct Continental roots, traditionally traced to Belgic migrants who crossed from Gaul sometime in the late second century BC. Their early coinage, including this stater type, derives stylistically from the Macedonian gold staters of Philip II, filtered through successive generations of Gaulish imitation until the original imagery became wholly abstract. The "ornate yoke" designation refers to a die-study classification in Sills rather than any ancient nomenclature.
