Cunobelin ruled from Camulodunum — modern Colchester — for roughly four decades, longer than any other pre-Roman British king on record. Shakespeare borrowed his name for Cymbeline, though the dramatist's geography and politics bear little resemblance to the historical figure. This particular "No Branch" variant is distinguished from the more common types by the absence of a branch element in the field, a die difference significant enough to warrant separate classification across all major references. The type was struck in the final years before Claudius's invasion of 43 AD effectively ended independent Catuvellaunian coinage forever.
