| Obverse description | Armored knight on horseback charging to the right, brandishing a raised sword in the right hand, with a lion shield positioned below dividing the encircling Latin legend. The equestrian figure is rendered in the vigorous late Renaissance style typical of Dutch provincial gold coinage. The legend is interrupted by the shield device and runs along the inner beaded border. |

| Reverse description | Crowned shield bearing the Friesland arms — a rampant lion passant — set within a beaded inner border and surrounded by a Latin legend giving the denomination, metal, issuing authority, and date. The crowned arms are executed in a bold, compact style characteristic of hammered provincial gold coinage of the late sixteenth century. The date 1583 appears at the end of the reverse legend. The overall design reflects the heraldic conventions established by the newly independent Dutch provinces. |
