Contemporary counterfeits of Tincomarus staters are well-documented within the Atrebatic series — these were not crude forgeries but plausible circulating pieces, likely produced by smiths operating close to or within the tribal economy. Tincomarus, son of Commius, maintained close ties with Augustus, and his coinage adopted Romanizing elements that set Atrebatic issues apart from most British Celtic output of the period. The cross-channel political relationship may have stimulated enough coin demand to incentivize unofficial production.
