Enrique I inherited the Castilian throne at age ten in 1214, with his sister Berenguela serving as regent — a arrangement that collapsed within months under pressure from the powerful Lara family, who seized control of the regency and effectively sidelined the crown. These maravedis were struck under that contested regency, making their issuing authority a matter of court politics as much as royal prerogative. Enrique himself died in 1217 after a roof tile fell on him during a game, ending the reign at thirteen and triggering an immediate succession crisis resolved only when Berenguela ceded her inherited claim to her son Fernando III.
