Obverse description Quartered shield of the Dauphiné arms occupying the central field, displaying in the first quarter the fleurs-de-lis of France, in the second the dolphin of Dauphiné, in the third a lion passant, and in the fourth fleurs-de-lis, all within a plain inner circle. The circumferential legend in Gothic uncial characters reads KAROLVS FRAnCORVM REX, meaning 'Charles, King of the Franks', separated by pellets or lis stops. The shield is rendered in a bold, angular hammered style typical of late-fifteenth-century French royal coinage.
