The four cantons are decorated alternately with two crowned Gothic letter F's (for Franciscus) and two fleurs-de-lis, arranged in a diagonally alternating pattern. The surrounding Latin legend is separated from the cross design by a beaded inner border, consistent with the hammered coinage style of Francis I. |
