| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse is dominated by a floriated cross pattée formed of four fleurs-de-lis arranged around a central orb or annulet, creating a bold cruciform design that fills the coin's field. In each angle of the cross, a crowned letter 'F' — the royal cypher of Francis I — is positioned, and salamanders appear in the interstices, reinforcing the king's personal iconography. The mint mark 'H' for La Rochelle is visible below the cross. The peripheral legend, in Latin, proclaims the Christus vincit formula: XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPERAT, a traditional invocation affirming Christ's dominion. The entire design reflects the refined artistic style of French royal hammered gold coinage of the early sixteenth century. |
