The mint mark 'H' for La Rochelle is visible below the cross. The peripheral legend, in Latin, proclaims the Christus vincit formula: XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPERAT, a traditional invocation affirming Christ's dominion. The entire design reflects the refined artistic style of French royal hammered gold coinage of the early sixteenth century. |
