Reverse description Central field displays an elaborate cross fleury, its four arms each terminating in stylised fleurs-de-lis and adorned with foliate volutes at the angles, with a quatrefoil rosette at the centre of the cross. The cross shaft is rendered with twisted rope-like detailing, giving the design a rich, sculptural quality. The whole is contained within a raised inner circle and surrounded by the Latin legend XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPERAT, separated by pellets and set between beaded borders. The devotional Christological inscription, a hallmark of French royal gold coinage, encircles the field in crisp, gothic-influenced lettering. The hammered flan displays the characteristic irregular shape typical of early sixteenth-century French gold issues.
