Christian IV's reign of sixty years is the longest of any Danish monarch, yet the gold coinage attributed to his rule spans a period of chronic fiscal stress — the disastrous wars against Sweden, particularly the Torstenson War of 1643–45, left the Danish treasury effectively broken and forced repeated debasements in the silver series.
