Jean the Blind issued this coin as Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia simultaneously, drawing on Bohemian revenues to fund a mint output that far exceeded what Luxembourg alone could sustain. The chaise d'or type itself originated with Philip IV of France in 1303 — Jean's adoption of it was a deliberate political alignment, not aesthetic imitation, reflecting his deep entanglement in French dynastic politics throughout the 1330s and 1340s.
Jean died at Crécy in 1346, charging into the English lines despite having been blind for a decade. His Luxembourgish coinage effectively ended with that battle.
