Shams al-Din Muhammad Shah III ruled the Bahmani Sultanate through a period of acute internal fracture, with real power held almost entirely by the Deccan-born faction led by Mahmud Gawan, the influential prime minister who effectively administered the sultanate for decades. The sultan himself was largely ceremonial. Coins issued under his name from the Gulbarga mint reflect this ambiguity — Gulbarga had already ceded its role as capital to Bidar in 1432, making late issues from that mint an administrative curiosity rather than a political statement.
