Obverse description Central shield bearing the arms of the Bishopric of Sion, surmounted by a bishop's mitre, all set within a beaded inner circle. The escutcheon displays a horizontally divided field with characteristic ecclesiastical heraldic devices rendered in low relief, typical of late medieval hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery within a beaded border, reading MATHEVS · EPS · SED, identifying the issuer as Matthaus (Schiner), Bishop of Sion (Sedunensis). The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-struck production of the period.
