Obverse description Right-facing diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valens, rendered in the late Roman imperial style characteristic of the Valentinianic period. The emperor wears a pearl diadem, and the paludamentum is fastened at the right shoulder, with the cuirass visible beneath. The legend DN VALENS PF AVG runs clockwise around the periphery of the flan. The portrait exhibits the broad, flat facial features typical of mid-4th century Roman die engraving, with short-cropped hair visible beneath the diadem.
