The County of Edessa was the first Crusader state established and the first to fall, taken by Zengi of Mosul in 1144 — an event that shocked Latin Christendom and directly triggered the Second Crusade. Coinage attributable to Joscelin I and his son Joscelin II is notoriously difficult to assign to a specific reign, as both counts struck bronzes of nearly identical type across a combined rule of roughly 26 years. The reference gap here is not unusual; Metcalf's corpus leaves several Edessan folles unresolved.
