Beschrijving voorzijde Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Honorius facing right, rendered in the late Roman imperial portrait style characteristic of the Theodosian dynasty. The bust displays a string of pearls forming the diadem across the brow, with the paludamentum (military cloak) visible at the shoulder over the cuirass. The encircling obverse legend reads DN HONORIVS PF AVG in Latin capital letters, identifying the emperor as Dominus Noster Honorius, Pius Felix Augustus. The portrait exhibits the somewhat stylized, frontal rigidity typical of late antique coinage from eastern mint workshops.

Aanvullende informatie

Honorius inherited the Western Empire at ten years old upon Theodosius I's death in 395, and the VIRTVS EXERCITI issues from Cyzicus date to precisely the period when his general Stilicho was consolidating military loyalty against the rival eastern court of Arcadius. The Cyzicus mint — geographically inside eastern territory — continued producing coinage for the western court during these years, a jurisdictional awkwardness that reflects how unsettled the division remained in practice. RIC X 68 is among the earlier emissions of this reign, struck before the political situation hardened into outright hostility between the two halves.
