A winged Victory stands behind the emperor, crowning him with a wreath and holding a palm branch in her left hand, the composition conveying martial virtue and divine favour. The divided legend VIRTVS - EXERCITI flanks the central group, invoking the valour of the army. A mint mark appears in the exergue identifying the Alexandria mint, with officina letters (ALEA or ALEB). The overall style is characteristic of the late fourth-century Eastern Roman bronze coinage. |
