The circumferential legend reads FL CONSTANTIS BEA C, identifying the subject as Flavius Constans, Beatissimus Caesar. The portrait occupies the full field of this small bronze, executed in the late Constantinian style characteristic of the Siscia mint. Between the two soldiers stands a single legionary standard surmounted by a round finial, the defining feature distinguishing this two-standard type's later single-standard variant as issued for Constans as Caesar. The encircling legend GLORIA EXERCITVS proclaims the glory of the army. The mint mark in the exergue denotes the Siscia officina, with the delta (∆) indicating the fourth workshop. |
