Obverse description Full-length frontal figure of St. John the Baptist, robed in flowing drapery, standing within a beaded inner circle. The saint cradles the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) in his left arm, rendered in the late-Gothic style typical of Rhenish florins. A circular Latin legend in uncial characters surrounds the figure, invoking the titles of Emperor Charles V. The bold, deeply struck relief and irregular flan are characteristic of hammered gold coinage of the early sixteenth century.
