Florin - Martin I Barcelona

Martin I inherited the Aragonese crown in 1396 under difficult circumstances — his brother John I died without a male heir while hunting, and the succession was contested enough that Martin spent considerable early energy consolidating authority across his territories. The Catalan florin was by this point a well-established imitation of the Florentine original, adopted by the Crown of Aragon in the fourteenth century to compete in Mediterranean trade circuits where Florentine gold set the standard.

Martin died in 1410 leaving no legitimate successor, triggering the Interregnum and ultimately the Compromise of Caspe. These florins represent the last issues of an unbroken Barcelona dynastic line.
