Godard of Bongard held the lordships of Heid and Bleid in the Eifel region, a fragmented territory caught between the competing jurisdictions of the Duchy of Luxembourg and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. His florin issues follow the Florentine weight standard that had spread through the Rhineland and Low Countries by the mid-fourteenth century, adopted by minor lords partly as a practical trading currency and partly as an assertion of independent authority. The thirty-year span of this issue reflects a reign of unusual stability for so small a lordship.
