The surrounding legend in Gothic blackletter script reads: + EDWAR D GRA REX ANGL Z FRANC DNS HIB, invoking Edward III's titles as King of England and France and Lord of Ireland. The die-work is characteristic of mid-14th century English hammered gold coinage, with confident engraving in the Flemish-influenced style introduced with the 1344 coinage reform. |

| Descrizione del rovescio | A large ornate cross pattée dominates the field, each arm terminating in three trefoils in a fleur-de-lis arrangement, the whole contained within a cusped quatrefoil frame with a fleur-de-lis on each cusp. A heraldic lion passant guardant is placed in each of the four spandrels formed between the arms of the cross and the quatrefoil border. The surrounding legend, in Gothic blackletter script, reads the opening verse of Psalm 6: DOMINE NE IN FURORE TUO ARGUAS ME, a devotional inscription standard on English gold coinage of this period. The overall design reflects the strong Flemish artistic influence present in the short-lived 1344 gold florin series. |
