Sayyid Muhammad Rahim II ruled Khiva as a nominally independent khan while operating entirely under the terms imposed by Russia's 1873 military conquest of the khanate. The Treaty of Gandhimian reduced Khiva to a Russian protectorate, stripping the khan of foreign policy and military autonomy. Local copper coinage continued — falus of this type circulated in the bazaars for small transactions — but the monetary system increasingly absorbed Russian imperial currency as the decades wore on.
Copper issues from this protectorate period are frequently poorly struck on irregular flans, a product of the Khivan mint's rudimentary equipment rather than any specific die problem.
