The countermark 'Adl Samarqand 899' — meaning "justice of Samarqand," AH 899 corresponding to 1493/94 CE — reflects the Timurid administrative practice of revalidating older copper coinage through official stamping rather than wholesale reminting. Falus copper was chronically underproduced and debased across Central Asia in this period, and municipal countermarking allowed local authorities to certify acceptable weight and authenticity without the expense of new dies.
Samarqand in 899 AH was in the final turbulent years of Timurid control; the Shaybanid Uzbeks would seize the city within a decade.
