Additional information

Moulay 'Abd al-Rahman ruled Morocco through a period of compounding external pressure — the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Isly in 1844 against French forces had already forced territorial concessions and exposed the limits of Makhzen military power. The falus denominations issued during his final years circulated in an economy increasingly disrupted by European commercial penetration and the unequal treaties that followed. Rabat's mint was among the smaller and less consistent producers, which accounts for the die variations catalogued under C#122b.
