Al-Mutawwakil's reign was fractured and contested — he ruled Morocco twice, losing the throne to his uncle Abd al-Malik in 1576 and then dying at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578, the three-way engagement that also killed King Sebastian I of Portugal and effectively ended the Aviz dynasty. Copper falus of this period circulated at the lowest register of Saadian economic life, and attributing them to specific reigns often rests on subtle epigraphic differences rather than explicit mint marks.
