Jean the Blind inherited Luxembourg in 1309 and spent almost none of his reign there. A compulsive campaigner who fought across Bohemia, Poland, Lithuania, and Italy, he was famously struck blind in one eye — then entirely — by the mid-1330s, yet continued leading troops personally. He died at Crécy in 1346 charging the English lines, reportedly ordering his knights to tie their horses to his so he could strike at least one blow. The esterlin coinage belongs mostly to the administrative machinery he left behind while absent on campaign.
