Honoré II secured formal recognition of Monegasque sovereignty from Louis XIII in 1641 through the Treaty of Péronne, which ended Spanish suzerainty and brought Monaco under French protection. These coins, struck roughly fifteen years after that treaty, represent the first sustained coinage issued under a truly independent Monegasque authority — before Péronne, Monaco had no practical basis for a domestic silver coinage of its own.
The series is notably short-lived, confined to 1658–1659, the final year of Honoré II's reign before his death in January 1662.
