The circular legend in uncial Latin characters reads KAROLVS DEI GRA FRANCORVM REX, identifying Charles VIII as King of France by the grace of God. The lettering is separated by annulets or lis-shaped stops throughout. |

The design is characteristic of the écu au soleil type of Charles VIII, maintaining the late medieval French royal coinage tradition. The outer legend, in uncial Latin, carries the Christus vincit acclamation: XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPERAT, with the mint mark letters P T appearing at the end identifying the Poitiers mint. |
