The crowned shield occupies the entire central field, with the sun appearing above the crown as the defining type of this issue. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the outer legend. The circular legend in uncial Latin characters reads KAROLVS DEI GRA FRANCORVM REX, identifying Charles VIII as King of France by the grace of God. The lettering is separated by annulets or lis-shaped stops throughout. |

The cross is cantoned by two letters in the angles, identifying the mint of issue, flanking a central quatrefoil or heart-shaped ornament at the intersection. The design is characteristic of the écu au soleil type of Charles VIII, maintaining the late medieval French royal coinage tradition. The outer legend, in uncial Latin, carries the Christus vincit acclamation: XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPERAT, with the mint mark letters P T appearing at the end identifying the Poitiers mint. |
