| Obverse description | The arms of France — a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis — surmounted by a royal crown and topped by a radiant sun, all rendered in high relief in the Gothic hammered style. The crowned shield occupies the entire central field, with the sun appearing above the crown as the defining type of this issue. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the outer legend. The circular legend in uncial Latin characters reads KAROLVS DEI GRA FRANCORVM REX, identifying Charles VIII as King of France by the grace of God. The lettering is separated by annulets or lis-shaped stops throughout. |
