Meinhard II's Adlergroschen is among the earliest groschen-type coins struck north of the Alps, predating the widespread adoption of the denomination across German-speaking territories by several decades. Meinhard issued it as part of a deliberate effort to consolidate monetary authority in Tyrol following his acquisition of the county in 1257 — a political move as much as an economic one, displacing a patchwork of episcopal and seigneurial coinages that had previously dominated alpine trade routes connecting Italy to the north.
The Brenner Pass traffic made Tyrolean coinage punching above its weight commercially. Merchants needed reliable silver for toll payments and commodity exchange; Meinhard's groschen filled that gap with unusual staying power.
