The "RESTITVTOR" series — struck in the early 130s following Hadrian's extensive provincial tours — commemorates his visits to nearly every corner of the empire between roughly 121 and 132 AD. Hispania received particular attention: Hadrian himself was born at Italica in the province, and the restoration rhetoric carried personal weight beyond the usual imperial flattery. Whether the coins circulated heavily in Hispania itself or remained largely a Rome-struck gesture is debated, but provincial finds suggest genuine distribution.
RIC II.3 1864 encompasses both dupondius and as attributions, a classification ambiguity that persists because surface patination frequently obscures the orichalcum-versus-copper distinction essential for separating the two denominations.
