A hippopotamus stands to the right, while a crocodile is depicted below in the waters, together forming a richly iconographic composition evoking the exotic fauna of the Nile. The senatorial authorization mark S C (Senatus Consultum) flanks the reverse field. The legend NILVS identifies the deity, situating this coin within Hadrian's celebrated series of provincial personification types issued following his tour of the eastern provinces. |
