| Reverse description | The river god Nilus reclines to the right in a languid pose, his mature bearded figure nude or semi-draped, holding a reed in one hand and a cornucopia overflowing with produce in the other, emblematic of the Nile's annual inundation and the fertility it bestows upon Egypt. A hippopotamus stands to the right, while a crocodile is depicted below in the waters, together forming a richly iconographic composition evoking the exotic fauna of the Nile. The senatorial authorization mark S C (Senatus Consultum) flanks the reverse field. The legend NILVS identifies the deity, situating this coin within Hadrian's celebrated series of provincial personification types issued following his tour of the eastern provinces. |
