The effigy presents the emperor with a short beard, reflecting Hadrian's well-known philhellenism and his role in popularising the bearded imperial portrait. The obverse legend encircles the bust, reading IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG, proclaiming his full imperial titulature. The radiate crown distinguishes this denomination as a dupondius, differentiating it from the laureate-crowned as. The composition commemorates the Adventus ceremony, the formal ceremonial arrival of the emperor in Rome, here presented as a symbolic encounter between Hadrian and the genius of the city. The legend PONT MAX TR POT COS III ADVENTVS AVG surrounds the central design, with the large senatorial mark of value S C flanking the figures in the field. The scene conveys themes of imperial legitimacy and the bond between the emperor and the city of Rome.
