Caesaraugusta — modern Zaragoza — was a Roman colony on the Ebro founded by Augustus and named for him, and its mint was among the most prolific provincial issuers under Caligula. The duoviri named in the legend, Licinianus and Germanus, served as the colony's magistrates responsible for authorizing this issue, a standard arrangement in Hispanic colonial coinage where local officials lent their names to the bronze series rather than Rome dictating the type centrally.
Caligula's provincial bronzes from Hispania are frequently better preserved than his Roman aes, simply because the western colonies circulated their coinage within tighter geographic loops. This piece falls within the narrow four-year window before Caligula's assassination in January 41 AD.
