| Obverse description | Bare or laureate head of Emperor Caligula (Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus) facing right, rendered in the provincial style characteristic of Caesaraugusta workshops. The portrait displays the emperor's characteristic features with a bold, slightly idealised effigy. The circumferential Latin legend G CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS IMP runs around the periphery of the field, identifying the emperor by his full imperial titulature. The coin exhibits the typical irregular flan and somewhat coarse die-cutting associated with Hispano-Roman provincial issues of the Julio-Claudian period. Surrounding this central device, a circular Latin legend reads LICINIANO ET GERMANO II VIR C C A, naming the two local magistrates (duoviri) Licinianus and Germanus responsible for the coin's issue, along with the colonial abbreviation. This magistrates' legend runs continuously around the periphery and is typical of the autonomous civic coinage produced at the Roman colony of Caesaraugusta (modern Zaragoza) under the authority of locally appointed officials during the reign of Caligula. The reverse composition reflects the standard format of Hispano-Roman provincial bronzes of this period. |
