Piedfort coins — struck at multiples of standard weight on thickened planchets — were almost never intended for circulation. In the Dutch Republic, they served as presentation pieces, diplomatic gifts, or tokens of distinction distributed by provincial minting authorities. Gelderland's mint at Harderwijk was among the smaller provincial operations, and issues at non-standard weights from this period were produced in extremely limited quantities, often to specific commission.
The 1716–1717 date range suggests production across two minting years, a span occasionally seen when a single authorized run bridged an annual account cycle.
