Ducaton `Zilveren Rijder` klippe, piedfort at double weight

Klippe piedforts of this type were never intended for circulation — they were presentation strikes, almost certainly produced for gift exchange among magistrates, foreign dignitaries, or the provincial States assembly itself. Gelderland's mint at Harderwijk had the authority to produce such pieces at double weight as demonstrations of die quality and civic prestige. At roughly 64 grams, this example is twice the weight of the standard ducaton, confirming the piedfort designation rather than a simple square flan novelty.

The 1662–1672 window spans a politically charged decade for the Dutch Republic, bracketing the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch Wars and the catastrophic French invasion of 1672 — the *Rampjaar* — during which Gelderland was among the first provinces overrun by Louis XIV's forces. That the Harderwijk mint continued producing prestige pieces into this period says something about provincial finances that ledgers alone rarely capture.
