The shield displays the dynastic and abbatial quarterings, incorporating heraldic animals and charges in fine intaglio work. A continuous Latin legend encircles the design within a reeded border, reading BEDA·D·G·S·R·I·P·S· ++ G·E·S·I·I·V·TH·A·V·A·E·, identifying the abbot by name and title as Prince of the Holy Roman Empire. |

| Description du revers | A standing bear rampant to the right, carrying a log on its shoulder and presenting a nail or peg, faces the haloed figure of Saint Gallus, the abbey's patron saint, shown seated and robed, holding a pastoral staff in his right hand and receiving the offering with his left. The scene alludes to the legendary encounter between Saint Gallus and the bear, a central motif in the iconography of the Abbey of Saint Gall. The date 1773 appears to the right within the field, and the engraver's initial H is visible at the bottom exergue. The circular Latin legend G·E·H·E·P·O·O·B·1773 runs along the upper periphery within a reeded border. |
