| Obverse description | At center, the spade-shaped arms of Bern — depicting a diagonally striped shield charged with a walking bear — surmounted by an ornate open crown. The shield is flanked at the base by two symmetrical olive or laurel sprigs, tied together at their stems, framing the lower portion of the arms in a decorative heraldic arrangement. The encircling Latin legend reads RESPUBLICA BERNENSIS, separated by a pellet stop, and runs along the full periphery of the field. The coin's rim is defined by a fine toothed or milled border. |

Within the oval, a five-line Latin religious inscription reads BENE DICTUS SIT IEHOVA DEUS, followed by the date 1789 with a pellet stop, all rendered in bold serif capital letters. Below the oval frame, outside it, the denomination mark 1 · DUC · appears in the lower field.
