In 88 BC, Mithridates VI of Pontus sacked Rhodian ally cities and blockaded trade routes throughout the Aegean, and while Rhodes itself resisted his forces, the broader monetary economy of the region was badly fractured. The "Somacho" designation refers to the magistrate's name appearing on the issue — a naming convention Rhodes used consistently across its late Hellenistic and early Imperial-period drachm production to denote the responsible monetary official.
