Orodes III ruled Elymais — a semi-independent kingdom in what is now southwestern Iran — as a vassal under Parthian suzerainty, though the dynasty maintained its own coinage well into the second century. By this period, Elymaean silver had degraded so severely that "billon" is generous; many issues approach bronze in actual silver content, reflecting either deliberate debasement or the kingdom's increasingly marginal economic position relative to its Parthian overlords.
